Driving with a scratched windshield can cause blindness. The sun reflects off scratches, decreasing visibility. Water can also collect in the grooves, making it difficult for windshield wipers.

Most minor scratches can be fixed with the right tools. However, more serious scratches will require specialist glass repair. Here are the essentials.

  • Glass repair kit
  • Cerium Oxide rubbing compound

Step 1: Use your fingernail for a deeper scratch

Your fingernail should be pushed along the windshield scratch. You will feel minor scratches and your nails will not get caught in a groove. You may notice your fingernails becoming caught in a groove if you have a severe scratch on your windshield.

It is important to address deep scratches as soon as possible. They can lead to more damage over time and eventually cause your windshield’s shattering. Windshield replacements cost $200 to $1,000 depending on your car’s make and model.

Step 2: Purchase a glass repair tool

You can either visit your local auto shop and order a windshield replacement kit online or at your local auto repair shop. We recommend.

Step 3: Clean your windshield with the rubbing compound

To remove dirt and dust from your windshield, wash it with soapy water. Before applying the Cerium Oxide rub compound, dry your windshield with a microfiber cloth.

The repair kit is a device that applies pressure to the area to remove any air from it. This allows compound to be applied to the damaged area without the possibility of creating air bubbles.

You can use the resin compound to repair a small crack or scratch. Start at one end and work your way around the crack. If you look at the scratches from 45 degrees, you will see darkened areas filled with the compound. Apply a little pressure to the windshield from the inside on the sides and middle of the windshield crack if there are any air pockets left after 5-10 minutes.

  • Use curing strips to treat the area.

While toothpaste can be used to remove small scratches and etchings from windshields, it is not recommended for any other minor repairs.

Step 4 Place your car in direct sunlight to allow the compound to dry

After you have applied the curing strips to your vehicle, let it dry in direct sunlight. To allow the compound to cure, you can also use ultraviolet light. It takes approximately 5-10 minutes for the compound to dry completely.

Take out the resign strips. Reapply the strips if the compound is still damp. Let the compound sit for a longer time. Hold the razor blade at 90 degrees and scrape off the hardened resin.

During this process, you don’t need to use much pressure. As you scrape away excess compound, it is common to see white flakes.
